DORSET'S Shaun Webster bounced back from adversity to claim a place in the final two days of the Victor Chandler British Masters at Woburn yesterday.

Webster carded an impressive four-under-par 68 - eight shots better than his first round effort - to make the halfway qualifying mark of level par.

In stark contrast, Broadstone's Gary Emerson crashed out following a disastrous second-round 77 to finish on five over par.

Webster got off to a storming start with three birdies in his first four holes.

And there was even better to follow for Webster at the par five 538-yard seven hole when he chalked up an eagle as he reached the turn in an astonishing 31 shots, five under par for the day.

But disaster followed for the 26-year-old East Dorset touring professional at the 374-yard 10th hole when he recorded a double-bogey six.

Webster compounded the damage with a further dropped shot at the following hole before staging another recovery with birdies at the 12th, 14th and 15th holes.

One further blemish at the 16th was followed by consecutive pars to finish off a roller-coaster ride for Webster.

Emerson, meanwhile, had began the day on level par - four strokes better off than Webster. But Emerson, who began his second round from the 10th tee, slipped off the pace with dropped shots at 13th and 16th holes.

Worse was to follow at the 18th hole when he rattled up a triple bogey seven.

Emerson dropped further down the field with a bogey four at the sixth before claiming his only birdie of the day at the ninth and final hole.

Phillip Price (11 under par) and England's Ian Poulter (nine under par) are first and second at the halfway stage following rounds of 65 and 67 respectively.

Sandy Lyle, 10 years on from his last win, matched Price's round and is only four shots behind the Welshman.
