LIZZIE Jeanes could go down in history at Wey Valley as the best new teacher the school has ever had.

The 24-year-old history teacher is in the running for the national Guardian Award for outstanding new teacher.

Later this month she is set to attend the southern regional awards ceremony in Southampton - and if she scoops the top honour she will be in with a chance of clinching the national title.

Lizzie was nominated by head of history, Jeremy Wilton and headteacher, Marcia Headon. Mrs Headon said: "She is a fantastic teacher - she has sparkle, enthusiasm, great subject knowledge and a wonderful relationship with her pupils. We're all very proud of her."

Lizzie has taught at Wey Valley for two years - and this is her first teaching post. She said: "It is really nice to be nominated - but I was really amazed when I first heard.

"Award assessors have already been into school to sit in on my lessons, look at the children's work and my lesson plans. They were really thorough - it was like having my own mini-Ofsted inspection.

"I have a passion for my subject and I hope that comes through to the kids when I'm teaching. It's great when you can see they're getting a buzz from what they're learning."

Mrs Headon added: "Lizzie shows dynamism and innovation in the classroom. In 12 years as a headteacher I have never yet come across a newly qualified teacher who has brought so much to a school.

"Pupils love her lessons because she makes them fun, while at the same time challenging pupils' thinking."
