SHOW houses at the controversial Maen development in Dorchester are to open next weekend.

Developers Banner Homes are throwing open doors at the Rosewood Gardens complex after nearly two years of building work.

The move comes after nearby householders, nature lovers and town councillors raised fears about the scale of the development and the effect on nearby trees.

Town councillors also called for the word Maen, by which the wooded area was known, to be included in the new complex's name.

Bosses from Banner Homes have heralded the launch of the development on Saturday, June 8, by holding a 'search for a local hero' to open the first show house.

They want wellwishers to nominate a friend, relative or colleague to perform the honour - and receive cash for their chosen charity.

Elaine Stratford, Banner Homes sales and marketing director, said: "At Banner we try hard not to just create great homes, but also make a positive contribution to the local communities we build within.

"We're therefore asking Dorset Echo readers to write in to us nominating a friend, relative or colleague who they feel has shown outstanding courage or compassion in the past year.

"We also want them to tell us why this person should win."

Banner Homes claim the complex, in the grounds of historic Maen House, has attracted a flood of interest from West Dorset families, professional people and people wishing to move into Dorchester from surrounding villages.

The development has a mix of two bedroom flats, three-storey houses and four bedroom homes.

The winner of the local hero competition will open the Rosewood Gardens' two bedroom show home on Friday, June 7, at 11am.

He or she will also receive £100 for their chosen charity and £100 in vouchers.

Nominations for Banner's local hero should be addressed to Angela Parker, Banner Homes Wessex, Hancock House, 37 Jewry Street, Winchester, Hants SO23 8RY.
