THE plan was simple - England would sweep past Sweden and onto World Cup glory.

But unfortunately, as every football fan knows, things never go as expected with the national team.

Fans clad in St George crosses and replica shirts were on the edge of their seats throughout yesterday's disappointing 1-1 draw with the Scandinavians.

The only winner of the first round were pubs throughout Dorset which were jam-packed with fans glued to big screens and televisions, despite the early 10.30am kick-off.

The Golden Lion, in Weymouth town centre, had eager supporters queuing at their door from 9am.

Manager Gemma Roberts said: "About 40 people were outside the pub all wanting to get a decent place and we're really pleased with the way things went.

"We were worried that the early kick-off times would put a few people off but the turn-out was brilliant. People everywhere came out to support the team."

Most of the crowd left deflated after the stalemate, in which England dominated the first half and led through Sol Campbell's header, only to see Sweden peg them back when Everton midfielder Niclas Alexandersson equalised.

Fans howled their disapproval when star midfielder David Beckham was withdrawn by boss Sven Goran Eriksson. After the game, supporters claimed the manager needed to make changes to the team if the notorious slow-starters England were to get through to the last 16 of the tournament.

James Barnett, 23, from Weymouth, said: "We were lucky to get a draw because we were hanging on in the second half."

Paul Collins, 22, also of Weymouth, said: "Their goal was always on the cards because we were useless in the second half."

Simon Horlock, 23, said: "Hopefully Sven can put it right for the Argentina clash on Friday because that is a massive game for us now."
