SPRINGFIELD Country Club followed up their victory over David Lloyd, Bournemouth, with a 15-4 win over Ferndown and now top Division One A of the Dorset Summer Cup.
The Wareham-based team, under the captaincy of ex-county champion Mark Hurd, are 13 points clear of nearest rivals South Dorset One who have recorded one win over their own second team, 17-2.
In Division One B, Graham Adams' Canford side are mounting a strong challenge to leaders Weymouth, and, after two victories over West Hants (17-2) and Hamworthy (13-7), are just three points behind the Seasiders.
Ferndown are the only unbeaten team in Division Two A, but with 31 points are still only in fourth place behind three teams that have played one game more. Managed by Ron McEwan, the Ferndown team overwhelmed Poole, winning 17-3, and then beat Bridport 14-7.
Weymouth top the league, but spoilt their record when they lost 15-10 to Dave Bissett's Bournemouth Sports Club side. The Sports Club team is currently in second place but they lost to Poole who are in third place.
David Lloyd, Ringwood lead Division Three B having recorded victories over Hamworthy and Geoff Turnball's Bournemouth Sports team. Three points further back are Ferndown whose Andy Legg has led to wins over David Lloyd, Bournemouth and Two Riversmeet.
The Bournemouth Junior Open Tournament will be staged at David Lloyd, Bournemouth on June 7, 8 and 9. The event, which is sponsored by State Securities and The Waugh Group, has attracted a high quality entry from all over the south of England.
Local interest comes from Andy Gibson of West Hants in the boys under-17 years, Katie Oliver (Canford) in the girls under-17 years, West Hants' Athene Hunt in the girls under-15s, Ben Rothrie from Verwood in the boys under-15s and Alex Hann (David Lloyd, Bournemouth) in the under-13s. Irena Critchley (Talbot Heath), currently ranked three in the country at under-13 level, misses the tournament as she is away on holiday.
At the annual meeting of Dorset Squash Association, John Pitt was elected chairmen in a contested vote with Tony Steel.
Pitt has been running the JP Blandford Club for many years, and has competed in the county leagues for longer than most of us can remember. He is the captain of the Dorset veterans team and continues to lead his club in local competition.
