Beaminster pick up vital losing points
SUTTONERS 248-8 (20pts) beat BEAMINSTER 197 (9) by 51 runs.
BEAMINSTER picked up important points despite going down against impressive Suttoners at Dean Park.
The high flying home side sensibly elected to bat in the red hot conditions and motored along on the big outfield.
At 103-2 and then 194-3, they looked to be cruising to a total of over 300 runs.
But Beaminster captain Ian Hutchings brought himself on and got the ball to turn, slowing Suttoners to 248-8.
After, chasing round the field in the blistering heat, it was always going to be big ask for Beaminster.
They had a good go however, with wicketkeeper opener Richard Bugler in excellent form yet again.
He hung around for 40 overs with a patient knock, beginning to open up when Beaminster had five extra batting points in the bag by reaching 170.
Hutchings and Simon Jones weighed in with 24 runs each, but the visitors were eventually 51 runs short. "The important thing was that we picked up nine points in defeat," said Hutchings.
"We thought we would be chasing a bigger total because on that outfield, once the ball was past you it was a boundary.
"But we did well to limit the runs. In reply we started slowly at 96 from 26 overs but after 33 we had 132, and we accelerated just to try to get ourselves close.
"It was not a bad performance and I'm still very positive because it does not affect our average too much," he added.
