Portland United have been rocked by an injury to midfielder Stuart Heath on the eve of the new Sydenhams Wessex League campaign.

The former Terras star has been ruled out for the season with a ruptured crutiate knee ligament.

Disappointed Blues boss Nick Preston told Echosport: "It's gut-wrenching news and we're all devastated for Stuart. He missed a large chunk of last year through injury and I know he was really looking forward to the coming season."

Heath's latest problems began after falling awkwardly in Portland's warm-up victory over Weymouth a month ago. But after a scan revealed only minor damage to his left knee he was told to rest for a couple a weeks.

He resumed training

earlier this week but broke down during a running session at Grove Corner.

Preston explained: "Stuart seemed fine for most of the session but he suddenly broke down towards the end of it. It was obvious he was in absolute agony and I think we all knew then that this time it was a lot more serious.

"He then went to see a specialist in Bournemouth where he had another scan which shows he's now ruptured the cruciate ligament."

He added: "Unfortunately that's him out for the whole season which is massive blow to both Stuart and the club. He remains one of the best players at this level of the game and it's going to hurt not having him in the side."

Preston has now begun the search for a left-sided replacement with Wey-mouth's John Lamb top of his wanted list.

"I need someone and need someone quick", added the manager. "John Lamb is a player I'd be very interested in but it's a case of looking around and seeing who's available."

Darren Whyton scored twice in Portland Reserves' 5-1 victory over Weymouth Reserves at Grove Corner last night.
