MOVES are afoot to change a "one-off" parking regulation that landed a disabled couple with a £30 fine.
Keith and Rosemary Conway were stunned when they were ticketed in a Wareham car park only 20 minutes after arriving and putting their disabled badge on display.
It was only then they discovered that, unlike other council-run car parks, the one at Howard Lane charges disabled users if they are unable to park in one of the two designated parking bays.
The Conways failed to see a sign warning about the local regulation and assumed, as is the case in other car parks, that they would be exempt from having to pay if they showed their disabled badge.
After the story was highlighted in the Echo, and the couple wrote to the council explaining what had happened, their fine was quashed.
Now a motion is to go before Wareham Town Council to bring its one-and-only council-owned car park into line with others in the town and neighbouring districts.
It would avoid confusion, according to Cllr Eric Osmond, Liberal Democrat group leader, who has put forward the idea.
"Our motion will bring the car park in line with the rest in the town so parking restrictions are all the same and there is no mix up," he said.
Mrs Conway, of Rockley Road, Hamworthy, also favours a change.
She said: "They do need to do something - either increase the number of disabled parking spaces or take away the bylaw, because it is just not fair and there are so many more disabled drivers nowadays."
The motion will be presented to the town council on Friday.
