PREGNANT Hayley Jones had gone into labour when she was stuck in a traffic jam on the way to hospital.

So her quick-thinking husband Jonah enlisted the help of Sergeant Tony Smith who used the flashing blue light on his police car to get them through the rush-hour gridlock in Weymouth.

The couple arrived at Dorset County Hospital just in time for Hayley to give birth to a healthy baby girl named Phoebe Lily who was born last Monday weighing 7lb 10oz.

Pharmacist Hayley, 28, who lives in Rodwell, Weymouth, said: "I really want to thank Sergeant Smith for helping because without him I don't know if we would have made it to Dorchester in time.

"I was on all fours in the back of our car and my waters had broken. We had reached Manor Roundabout near Safeway in Weymouth and the traffic was chock-a-block.

"Jonah was very calm. Then I thought we were heading in the wrong direction and asked Jonah where we were going and he said 'I'm going to the police'."

Jonah, 31, who rents out pedalos on Weymouth beach, turned the car round and drove to Weymouth West Police Station in Radipole Lane where Sgt Smith came to the rescue.

He said: "I had just finished work and was about to go home and heard a voice at the front counter. When I heard what was happening I thought the best thing to do was get there as soon as possible.

"We got in the car and I put the blue lights on to get through the traffic. She was in a lot of discomfort."

Despite his actions, Sgt Smith, 41, who lives in Weymouth, modestly added: "It was just nice to help someone out."

Proud mum Hayley is now back at home with Phoebe - her first child - who she says is doing well.

But she added: "The most anxious part of the whole experience was actually getting to the hospital. I have already said I will be having my next child at home."
