A SPECTACULAR fireworks display marking a century of powered flight was the fitting culmination of the 95th Christchurch Regatta and Carnival fun weekend.

The stunning aerial display on Saturday night drew thousands of spectators to Christchurch Quay.

Fun and frolics had been the order of the day with something for all ages. Live bands performed on a giant stage erected on the quay, the Fafnirs Bane Viking village re-enactment took place along with a variety of children's entertainment.

Carnival secretary Kim Brook said the weekend had been a "great success" and she hoped it would raise several thousand pounds for charities nominated by members of the public.

"It has been brilliant," she said. "The atmosphere has been wonderful.

"We have had lots of people coming in and just sitting on blankets around the stage to watch the entertainment."

Describing the fireworks spectacular, which attracted some 6,000 people, Kim said: "The fireworks were absolutely fantastic. As usual, our display was much bigger than Bournemouth's, costing £6,000 to stage."

Yesterday more arena events and live bands took centre stage at the quay with family entertainment throughout the day including marching bands and the long-awaited finals of the junior talent showcase.

Six talented teenagers topped the bill after auditioning for a coveted place in the finals earlier in the month.

Each of the under 18-year-olds performed two numbers or acts to the crowds.

And those receiving the loudest cheers were awarded the top prizes.

"We wanted them to entertain us," said Kim. "It was not about being the best singer but putting on a good performance."
