THEY'RE at it again!

Speed camera workers are making hasty changes to signs in Bournemouth after a Daily Echo story revealed they may be illegal.

They were spotted painting over black borders which could lead to hundreds of appeals from motorists.

The signs were pictured on the front of the Daily Echo on Friday and the work to remedy the situation was underway by yesterday morning.

The move comes just weeks after the Daily Echo revealed a new speed camera in Wimborne Road, Bournemouth, was virtually invisible to the motorist due to overhanging trees .

The article provoked dozens of readers to phone the Echo offices with similar stories about obscure speed cameras

Days later workers were dispatched to the site to cut the offending branches.

The latest fiasco involves large signs on the Wessex Way which are yellow, contain a circular 50mph sign and a picture of a camera. The signs are encased in a thick, black border which appear to be the root of the problem.

Driver Robert Houtman contacted the Echo after he was snapped travelling at 58mph in a 50mph limit on the Wessex Way.

He was fined £60 and given three penalty points but, before he paid up, Mr Houtman remembered reading about a similar case in Cleveland.

There, two police officers were let off speeding fines after a court ruled the black border breached Department of Transport regulations.

A spokeswoman for the Dorset Safety Camera Partnership explained that some signs may have caused confusion and were being altered and they would be replaced as soon as possible.
