Dorchester RES 2 HAMWORTHY REC 2 DORCHESTER were left wondering exactly how they failed to win last night's Dorset Premier League game after running rings round their visitors.
Phil Simkin's dominant young side enjoyed most of the possession and rained countless efforts at Kevin Leonard's goal. But twice the ball cannoned back off the bar and the experienced keeper, pulled off a string of saves as well as being let off by some indifferent finishing.
"We have to be disappointed because we've only got two points from two games when we should have had six," said Simkin. "Tonight they had two shots and two goals, but I was really chuffed with the quality of our play."
Rec started sluggishly and the impressive Aaron Turner, who has turned down an approach from Salisbury, went close to an early opener for the Magpies.
But there was nothing rusty about the way Gavin Scott finished Rec's first real attack in the tenth minute. His drive left goalkeeper Andy Graves helpless.
Turner saw his close range shot spin along the goal-line and defender Dan Lock thundered a volley against the crossbar. Leonard sprawled to parry Turner's drive after 23 minutes and blocked bravely from Warren Brierley's rebound.
Neat footwork from Turner set up the equaliser four minutes later, mesmerising three defenders in a tight dribble before rolling the ball across the middle for a stretching Brierly to toe-poke past Leonard.
But the Magpies found themselves behind at the interval when a poorly positioned goalkeeper and wall invited Jamie Moores to spear a free-kick into the far corner.
Dorchester seized the initiative after the re-start and they levelled on 61 minutes through Turner.
With Rec dead on their feet, it seemed only a matter of time before the Magpies got the winner but there was no way past Leonard.
