Dive into Francois Ozon's beguiling thriller and you'll find more than you expect.
Beneath the deceptively placid surface of this intimate character study, lurks a complex portrait of the creative process in which reality and fiction are blurred.
Only in the film's haunting closing moments, with Philippe Rombi's orchestral score rippling seductively in the background, do we discover how much Ozon has been toying with us.
Emotionally repressed English thriller writer Sarah Morton (Charlotte Rampling) develops crippling writer's block and seeks advice from her good friend and publisher John Bosload (Charles Dance).
He suggests that Sarah spends some time at his villa, where she can relax and ignite the flame of her imagination.
However, the tranquility is shattered by the arrival of John's man-eating daughter Julie (Ludivine Sagnier) and the two women clash but are forced to put their differences to one side when tragedy strikes.
