DORSET could lose up to £340 million by the end of the summer because of foot-and-mouth, a report has claimed.
And more than 300 jobs have been lost across the county and the New Forest since the outbreak started - although there has not been one recorded case in the area.
Firms across the two areas have already lost £16.5 million since the crisis poleaxed the countryside in February, according to a survey published by the Dorset and New Forest Partnership.
And the losses look set to rise as the season peaks over July and August.
Information gleaned from 756 businesses shows that tourist attractions and visitor hotspots have already been hit very hard.
The closure of footpaths has meant a large drop in visitors to the area which has had a knock-on effect.
Attractions, bed-and-breakfasts, hotels, restaurants, cafes and associated businesses in towns and villages have all had large downturns in income. And an estimated 334 full-time equivalent posts have already gone.
