MOVES to ban alcohol from many of the town's public places have met with pleas from councillors to include all children's play areas.

A year since Bournemouth Council used its powers under the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001 to restrict drinking in certain places, and further trouble hotspots have been put forward for inclusion in the ban.

They include Kinson Green and its play area, Pelhams Park, Muscliff Park play area, Victoria Park, Shelley Park, Pine Road Park, River Stour Arboretum and Westover Road.

But speaking at the cabinet meeting on Wednesday Cllr Ron Whittaker asked the council to ban alcohol from all children's play areas.

He said: "If we start picking out pockets of play areas the problem will be moved from one place to another."

Stephen Godsall, Bournemouth council's director of leisure and tourism, said: "It's quite true that these problems move around the town each year but there are about 90 play areas here and only about 15 that cause a problem at the moment."

The council endorsed the list of proposed sites but pledged to talk with police over the next six weeks to discuss which further sites and play areas could be included in the ban.

The council meeting heard that a year since the order was first made and a lack of signage has made enforcement difficult.

Formal consultation will now begin regarding the proposed new sites for a ban and will seek the views of local licensees and the public before an order is brought into effect.

Among the areas to be added to the police's list for consideration of an alcohol ban are the play area at Epiphany School, King's Park and Tarrant Road and St James Square.

And councillors at Wednesday's cabinet meeting asked for Brassey Road in Winton to be included.
