ONE of the main routes on to the Isle of Purbeck has been branded a disgusting eyesore because of the piles of rubbish and human excrement being left behind by overnight campers.
Ferry Road is owned privately by the Bournemouth-Swanage Motor Road and Ferry Company so no action can be taken against the visitors. But discussions are under way with the National Trust, Dorset county council and Purbeck district council to try and find a long-term solution.
Up to 300 vehicles have been parked and visitors have been spotted regularly firing up barbecues within feet of internationally sensitive heathland.
Studland parish council clerk Robin Hilton said: "It is disgusting but there is very little we can do as a parish council unless the ferry company really helps and if Dorset county council releases funds to bring it up to standards."
Ferry company bosses would like to see the road adopted by Dorset county council, which has the power to introduce parking restrictions.
National Trust warden Geoff Hann is appealing for volunteers to help pick up litter along Ferry Road as part of a joint operation involving ferry company staff and the Trust.
The litter pick starts at 8am on September 4 and anyone wishing to help can contact Geoff Hann on 01929 450259.
