WRITER-director Menno Meyjes's controversial character study examines the relationship between Adolf Hitler and a fictional art dealer in the years following World War I, before The Fuhrer's rise to power.
Jewish dealer Max Rothman (John Cusack) lost his arm fighting in the German army and returns to Munich to open an art gallery in one of the city's abandoned factories.
He hopes to showcase the work of new artists, and support the two loves of his life: his wife Nina (Molly Parker) and young mistress Liselore (Leelee Sobieski). At this time, Max meets the young Adolf (Noah Taylor), who hopes to develop his talent for art.
While Max believes that Hitler shows great promise, the would-be artist loses interest in the canvas, and diverts his interests instead into politics, drawing strength from officer Captain Mayr (Ulrich Thomsen), who believes in his vision of a pure Aryan state.
