A BANK of land in Lyme Regis designated a protected green corridor site has been destroyed by developers building a new house and garage. Preservation group the Lyme Regis Society has written to the district council to express their concern about the bank, after they were told by planners it would be pre served when the property was built. Chairman of the society Bernard Spencer said: "The bank has been flattened even though its protection was a planning condition." Now the society is concerned that the bank- which some think could be as old as the Roman Road it borders - will never be the same again. Planning permission to build on the site was granted in December 2002, but one of the conditions of planning approval was that the green bank would be retained. The schedule of conditions reads: "No development shall be commenced until a landscaping scheme, which shall include boundary planting and the retention of the green bank adjoining Roman Road, together with a maintenance schedule for a minimum period of five years, shall have been submitted to and approved in writing by the local planning authority." A spokesman from West Dorset District council said they had asked the builder - Moore and Cousins of Bridport - to replace the bank. He said: "We have received a number of calls about the removal of the green bank in the Roman Road area. Following an inspection of the site we have contacted the developer and said that the bank should not have been removed and that it must be replaced immediately." At the time of going to press no-one from Moore and Cousins was available to com ment. *Roman Road, Colway Lane, Haye Lane, and part of Clappentail Lane areidenti fied as Green Corridors by the district council in order to protect the rural charac ter ofthese narrow lanes under Poilcy SA7. Policy SA7 is the chapter of a bookpub lished by the district setting out the conditions of the local plan andthe policy has been agreed by West Dorset Council.
