DEREK Wenn had plenty to shout about at Lyme Regis Golf Club on Monday.
The town crier of Colyton arrived in the clubhouse with a smile and a winning 39 Stableford points from competing in the Seniors' annual Ted Ray putter competition. It was his first win of the season.
Eighteen holes earlier he had not been smiling. He parred the 1st but only bogeyed the 2nd and then his drive found a bunker on the short 3rd.
He took four shots before he emerged and that was too many to score. "It was just like that Hamlet ad," he said ruefully.
Things brightened after that and he ended the first half with birdie and a total of 19 points. The second half was even better with pars on the 11th, 14th, 15th and 17th.
Now Derek can concentrate on his civic duties carnival week in the town opens on Saturday and Derek will be in full cry.
In second place on countback was Ray Ashworth and third was Mike Coleman.
Division 2 was won by Tony Johnstone from Charmouth with 38 on countback from Ian Duncan with one point behind John Kearney from Uplyme, making a welcome return to the prize lists.
New club treasurer David Retallack banked £35 into his personal account on Monday morning - his earnings from a superb round on Sunday when he and Mike Osborne won the Andrew Black pairs trophy with 47 points.
In second place on countback were George Meredith and John Culpan and third were Mike Wilson and Geoff Moss with 46 helped by a two at the 13th.
In fourth place were one of 14 ladies' pairs, Geraldine Wickes and Rhoda Elwick.
