WELTON ROVERS 1 BRIDPORT 3

TWO goals from teenager Warren White helped Bridport to a convincing victory over Welton Rovers at a windy West Clewes.

And it's a result that sends Pete Conning's buzzing Bees up to third place in the Screwfix Direct Premier Division table.

But despite being just three points behind leaders Bideford, assistant boss Barry Lawley says no one at St Mary's Field is getting carried away.

"The season's only four games old," he said, "and our feet are remaining firmly on the ground. But it's nice to be up there with the bigger sides and we're certainly going to enjoy it.

"Obviously this result is great for confidence and it puts us in good heart ahead of what will be a very tough FA Cup game at Mangotsfield on Saturday."

Bridport, who had the strong breeze in their favour during the first half, went ahead on 15 minutes following some confusion in the home defence which allowed a loose ball to find it's way to Warren White.

The young striker then hit a tame shot, which cannoned off three defenders and the foot of the post before dribbling past Dave Dyson in the Rovers goal.

Ten minutes later the Bees went further in front when Gary McAuley hit a 50-yard pass into the path of Mickey Greeno on the left-hand touch line. The ex-Bournemouth man, who had an outstanding game, then let it bounce once before striking a stunning lob that sailed over the goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net.

The visitors continued to dominate and they effectively sealed all three points in the 27th minute thanks to a

cracker from 17-year-old White.

He picked up a ball from Greeno some 35 yards from goal and unleashed a glorious drive that rocketed past a helpless Dyson.

Welton's best effort of the first period came when Chris Huish sneaked into the area to meet a cross but his close range toe poke was well saved by Bees' gloveman Martin Peters.

Bridport comfortably defended their three-goal advantage during the second half although there was a slight blip when Leyton Carpenter gave the home team a glimmer of hope with a simple tap in from a corner, 20 minutes from time.

But that proved too little to late for the side who travel to Portland in the FA Vase in a fortnight's time and it was the Bees who deservedly claimed victory.

Lawley added: "Welton aren't a bad side, but we just seemed to have the edge in all departments. Players like Mickey Greeno and Gary McAuley were superb and Warren White showed his versatility with two very different goals.

"The strong wind didn't make life easy, but we made the best of the conditions and then defended well as a unit."
