ENDURANCE athletes had a tough start to Dorset's massive three-day-long Enduroman event.

Eleven hardy swimmers took to the waters off West Bay beach at 8am yesterday, starting their 17-mile swim along Chesil Beach to Portland.

Four hours and four retirements later, the remaining seven were joined mid-swim at Abbotsbury by another 15 people racing over half the course.

Organiser Eddie Ette said the competitors suffered from a slight head wind, creating a difficult chop for the swimmers.

"It started very well, but the conditions were tough. The wind had a bit too much south in it and the swimmers have had to face the sea all the way," he said.

"This year's conditions are much tougher than a year ago," he added.

But today sees no let up, as the double and single marathons start this morning from Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy. Those who manage to complete the full 52 miles are expected back at the sailing centre after an estimated ten hours on the streets.

Sunday's cycle sees athletes make a 150-mile tour of Dorset, starting and ending at the academy and taking in Portland Bill, Bridport, Blandford Forum, Wimborne Minster and Wool.

The prize-giving ceremony is at the Aquasports Hotel in Castletown, Portland at 7.30pm.
