FOR the past three years disabled former nurse Alison Hill has relied on Gordon the retriever to help with everyday chores at her home in Stoborough, near Wareham.
The four-year-old trained working dog was able to empty the washing machine, help with shopping and raise the alarm if Alison had a fall.
Sadly the loss of a leg to cancer has left Gordon unable to carry out his duties and Alison is concerned that the loss of his official yellow jacket, indicating he is a working dog will mean he's barred from shops and restaurants.
Alison, 44, said: "It's sad he can't wear his yellow jacket anymore - the worry is if people see him with three legs in a yellow working jacket they are going to say 'how dare you make a disabled dog work'.
"But he wants to help and although he has lost his leg he is doing fantastic and he's really happy.
"We are hoping that some of the shops in Wareham will still allow him to come in - he has made a lot of friends."
Gordon was diagnosed with osteo-sarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer, last Christmas. Nationwide charity Dogs for the Disabled provided Alison with Gordon and is now funding treatment and transport to Cambridge University where he receives chemotherapy.
Wareham's United Reformed Church and Careline appeal have also helped towards costs.
Alison said: "Everyone has been absolutely incredible - the financial support has been great but it's also knowing they are there for me.
"We hope to get out and about at some point - Gordon has a lot of friends he likes to go and see.
"Since his operation he has been 100 per cent better - he's back to the old Gordon. He likes to play and he is thoroughly enjoying life."
