BEN Lawes' appeal for Terras fans to back Weymouth Cricket Club's bid for victory over Colehill on Saturday fell on deaf ears.

But the absence of any football fans on the boundary ropes at Redlands for the Dorset Premier Division title showdown had nothing to do with inter-sport apathy.

Skipper Lawes had hoped a sizeable chunk of the Wessex Stadium faithful would head for Dorchester Road following their side's Conference South opener against Cambridge City.

If they had, they wouldn't have seen any Cricket - Weymouth sent their championship rivals packing at 4.30pm following an amazing ten-wicket victory.

The result leaves the Seasiders needing maximum 50 points from their last two games of the season to retain the trophy they last won in 1999.

Lawes said: "It was an incredible game of cricket and one of the best performances ever by a Weymouth team.

"The destination of the title is now in our hands and we are determined to bring it back to Redlands. During the build-up I said it would be great if Terras fans came and supported us after the football and I think quite a few were planning to do so.

"When the game finished we had to ring the Wessex Stadium to ask them to make an announcement to prevent anyone coming up unnecessarily."

He added: "As it turned out a few people who'd come to Redlands actually managed to get down to watch the end of the football which is incredible when you think about it."

The Seasiders success was built around a sensation bowling performance during which they dismissed their illustrious opponents for just 83.

Openers Jim Ryall and Dean Janaway then knocked off the runs in just 11.1 overs to send Colehill back to Wimborne Road pointless.

"There's a long way to go yet", admitted Lawes, "and we'll need to be at our best to beat Broadstone and Dor-chester in our remaining games.

"Poole and Colehill are still breathing down our necks but this win certainly puts us in the driving seat."
