NEWLYWEDS Steve and Jo Blackmore made it a perfect match - by watching the Terras dressed in full wedding gear.

The happy couple decided to celebrate their marriage by cheering on Weymouth from the Wessex Stadium terraces against Grays Athletic on Saturday.

And the pair were joined at the game by more than 30 wedding guests, all decked out in wedding attire.

Terras nut Steve, who lives in Chickerell, said: "I'm a big Weymouth fan and there was no way I wanted to miss the game at the weekend so Jo and I got married at Kingston Maurward on Friday rather than the traditional Saturday.

"I wanted to do something a bit different to celebrate and extend the wedding so I persuaded Jo that the whole wedding party should attend the match in full wedding gear.

"I must admit that it did take a bit of persuasion on my part because she was a little reluctant at first, thinking we would stand out too much on the terraces.

"But I got all her friends to tell her what a great idea it was and luckily, in the end, she gave in and everyone else joined in the fun. I've never heard of anyone doing anything similar before but it was a great way to celebrate."

Jo said: "Although I come and watch Weymouth play quite a bit, I took a bit of persuading to come and watch the team in my dress.

"It has been a strange experience but I've enjoyed it all the same."

The couple, both police officers - Steve a detective constable and Jo a constable - met 18 months ago while stationed in Weymouth.

"We were both on the same squad and met each other through work," said Steve.

"I guess it must have been love at first sight."

The groom said working yards from the Wessex Stadium is an added bonus.

"I manage to get to every game I can but sometimes it is a little bit difficult because of my work duties," he said.

The match between Weymouth and Grays Athletic ended 1-1. Steve and his party were match ball sponsors on the day and his seven year old son Sean was mascot and also Best Man at the wedding.

Steve added "I'm hoping Sean will grow up to be as big a Weymouth fan as his dad."

"The result wasn't the best but we've all had a great day."

Weymouth FC commercial manager Melanie Sharpe said the club provided a buffet reception for the wedding party.

"I think this is the first time the club as done anything like this and it's certainly something a bit different," she said.

"Everyone looked quite a sight on the terraces but we hope the party had a great day and wish Steve and Jo all the best for the future."

She added that the Terras may consider applying for a licence to hold marriages at the club in the future.

"If the demand is there that is something we may well look at, especially in our planned new stadium," she said.

The couple will honeymoon in Venezuela next January.
