SWANAGE and Wareham bowed out of the Powergen Cup in the first round after losing 29-11 at home to Bridgwater and Albion.

Despite a valiant effort by Swans, Bridgwater's three-quarter line proved too good for the Purbeckers at Bestwall.

The final score did not reflect Swans' overall performance, but some lessons must be learned from the defeat.

Within two minutes of the start, Swans were caught offside and Albion fly half Andrew George kicked the goal.

Then from a turn over ball on the Swans 22 metres line, Bridgwater spun the ball all the way out to winger Gavin Hancock, who was not tackled by Swans defence, and he went in for a try half way out.

George converted to put Bridgwater 10-0 up after only eight minutes.

A few minutes later Hancock repeated the move and again Swans defence were asleep as he went in for his second try.

Trailing 15-0 with barely 15 minutes gone, Swans had a lot of ground to make up, and it fell to the forwards to grind it out.

Several times they ventured into the Bridgwater 22, but their only reward before the break was a Phil Graves penalty.

Swans looked a different side in the second half, putting Bridgwater under constant pressure, but the Bridgwater defence held firm.

Then 16 minutes into the second half, Swans' ineffectual tackling let winger Mat Satala through to outstrip the Swans full back to score and George converted.

Swans replacement Karl Randle went over for Swans only try shortly after coming on and from then on they put Bridgwater under continual pressure.

However a large number of penalties went unconverted before Phil Graves converted one in front of the posts to after 75 minutes to close the gap to 22-11.

However, into time added, Swans were guilty of not tackling the Bridgwater three-quarters and Gavin Hancock went in for his hat trick of tries with George again converting.
