POOLE businesses will find out later this month which of them have been selected to receive the prestigious 'Palms 2004', annual Tourism awards that recognise quality, commitment and innovation which has had a significant impact on the town's tourism industry.

The winners will be announced on September 30 at a luncheon held at the Hytes Restaurant at the Harbour Heights, attended by the town's leading tourism and business figures.

The Palms, organised by Poole Tourism, are now in their second year and are once again being sponsored by local commercial property agents and surveyors, Sibbett Gregory. Jonathan Sibbett, director at the agency, said: "Poole is renowned for the quality of its product and service and we are delighted to help recognise those local businesses and individuals who ensure that the town maintains its position as on of the UK's leading resorts".

He added "The standard of Poole's Tourism industry is second to none and these awards clearly endorse Poole's quality image and reputation."

There are four 'Palm' awards:

Tourism Personality of the Year - someone who has contributed significantly to the Tourism industry in Poole, displaying a range of skills and attributes such as dynamism and innovation - last year's winner was John Butterworth (FJB Hotels).

Tourism Promotion of the Year - activity/campaign which has demonstrated excellence and innovation in promoting Poole and generated extensive audience reaction - 2003 winner was Poole Audi Eat Out! Guide (Poole Audi).

Tourism Development of the Year - a development that has identified and exploited opportunities that benefit and contribute to the tourism product and local community - last year's winners were Branksome Beach Restaurant (Banquets Group).

Long Term Personal Contribution to Tourism in Poole - A special award presented to an individual who has had significant past achievements in the Tourism industry in Poole, raising standards, expectations and acting with vision - last year shared by John Butterworth (FJB Hotels), Robert Leonard (Mansion House Hotel) and Cllr Brian Clements (Borough of Poole).

Bruce Grant-Braham, chairman of Poole Tourism Panel, said: "We have had so much to celebrate in Poole over the past few years that it is only right that we try to recognise such success.

"These awards are important to champion best practice, recognise excellence in the town, reward achievement, dynamism and innovation, and to create exemplars for others to aspire to. With so much excellence in the town the judges will have some very difficult decisions to make'".
