"THANKS for a fantastic week," that was the comment of a visiting sailor to Parkstone Yacht Club's office at the end of Poole Week.

After six days of mostly strong winds and dull, sometimes raining, days, members and visitors still had smiles and good memories of this 57th annual event.

Only on one day, Tuesday, was the breeze too strong to race, but five races were completed, giving four to count.

In the absence of the Havills, who have dominated the Enterprise fleet for years, it was the home club's Edwards family, Richard and Paru, who were outright winners with four points (four wins from four races).

This feat was duplicated in the RS400 class, where Hywell Roberts and Karen Baker came out on top.

Bryan Drake, Sailing in the Dart Class with Jasmine Lamey, was also an outright winner with four points.

Family fortunes favoured the Tylers too, Steve and Ally winning the Merlin Rocket class with just four points.

Poole Yacht Club's Martin Lewis and Steve Brown took fast handicap honours, in their Osprey Schaffino, with four.

Several had five points counting, Parkstone's Donald Macdonald being number one in the 30-strong Laser fleet.

The Flying Fifteens were dominated by Philip Owen and Peter McKenna in Fifteen Love, their run of aces only spoilt by a win from Keith Aldridge and Chris Jermyn.

Parkstone's popular past Commodore, Eric Scoble, won the Classic Flying Fifteen prize with Russell Hammerton in Bullrush II.

Home club Shrimper sailors, Colin Lord and John Turner, won with five points, as did Peter and Julie Drake in the Dolphins.

Young Zoe Dunne won overall too with five, only being beaten twice by second placed clubmate Anthony Osman in the Laser 4.7s.

Parkstone's race management was as slick as ever, with Bruce Gridley in overall charge of the nine-person team aboard the club's new Nelson committee boat, Ron Cox.

In all eight RIBs and 10 other safety vessels were dotted around the huge courses using harbour and bay, with John Barrand and Jason Elms undertaking the massive task of co-ordinating them all.

The whole week saw 77 people out on the water on rescue duties and 12 on race management.

Add to that the office, catering and social organisation and you have some idea of the size of this event.

Poole's first three-day Sea School Regatta takes place this week.

The National Federation of Sea Schools (NFSS) and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) have organised the event to showcase RYA training at its best.

A total of 10 yachts will compete in the regatta, with a variety of extra entertainment including a barbecue and quiz night for all involved, sponsored by the largest commercial RYA sailing school in the UK, Rockley Watersports, based in Poole.

Sailing his Evolution 26 Revolution, Lilliput Sailing Club's Ian Wall won the unrated handicap class at the Torquay Regatta under a handicap system where your number is adjusted after every race.

Wall gained a superb three firsts and two seconds.

Parkstone Yacht Club's Ian Hayes and Christine Simpson achieved a class second in Eye Eye.
