AN innovative new racing dinghy built by a former Woodroffe schoolboy was launched in Lyme Regis over the bank holiday. The Fat Bottomed Girl, which takes its name from its distinctive shape, was designed and built by Chris Turner, who runs Specialised Marine in Coombe Street. Mr Turner, 32, intends to race the new boat in the International 14 world championships in New Zealand next year, with the help of his old friend Sean Fergusson, another ex-Woodroffe boy, who is sponsoring the boat with his media company, Brandedmedia. Mr Fergusson brought some of his most presti gious clients - including business folk from Virgin and NTL - to Lyme Regis at the weekend to take part in the launch. Sean Fergusson said: "Brandedmedia's growth has been remarkable over the past two years and I wanted to share our suc cess in a unique way. "Being involved in the launch of a completely new craft has been very exciting and this project reflects Brandedmedia's innovation and creativi ty." International 14s are similar to the 49ers recently raced by UK bronze medallists at the Olympics, but the International 14 is a development boat, which Mr Turner likens to a Formula One car, in that it can constantly be changed and adapted to enhance its performance. Mr Turner, who has been making boats since he was 16, will be sailing with his colleague, Peter Bagwell. The pair made the car bon fibre boat, which has an unusual and extremely powerful sail in just under three weeks. Mr Turner said he now intends to sail the boat and fine tune it until the world championships next year. After that it will go to its new owner in America.
