MEMBERS of Christchurch Royal British Legion set out to prove they are not just a band of old soldiers shining their gongs when they staged an open day on Saturday (September 4).
The packed bar downstairs was doing a roaring trade while new membership details were being taken in the ballroom upstairs.
Branch chairman Peter Welsh said: "I want to dispel two myths.
"Number one - we're not just a lot of old men polishing our medals.
"Myth two - you do not have to be an ex-serviceman to be a member."
He had the support of three mayors to back him.
Visitors to the club at 61/63 Bargates included Christchurch Mayor Cllr Sue Spittle; Poole Mayor Cllr Les Burden and Bournemouth's Mayor, Cllr Emily Morrell-Cross.
Mrs Morrell-Cross said she was not a member but very supportive of the Royal British Legion.
She pointed out if it had not been for the soldiers, sailors and airmen during the Second World War Britain would be a very different place.
"I can't do enough for them," she said.
Mr Welsh said: "If we don't have new members this branch will close and it will be a sad day if that happens."
The branch currently has about 2,000 members and at least 30 new ones were signed up on Saturday with another 15 or so new members of the women's section.
Anyone who is interested in joining should contact Mr Welsh on 01202 470199. New members' night is the first Thursday in every month at 7pm.
