MATEJ Ferjan had to be coaxed out for a lap of honour after he was the only Pirates rider to beat Jason Crump as Poole beat Belle Vue 54-40 on Sept 9.

The Slovenian thrilled a 2,500 crowd at Wimborne Road by lowering the World Championship Grand Prix leaders' colours in fantastic style in heat nine.

Crump had already defeated Ryan Sullivan in a titanic race four clash during an Elite League tussle.

And it looked as though the Ace might go through the card unbeaten before Ferjan's heroics.

But, to the astonishment of the Poole RIAS fans, Ferjan didn't at first go round on speedway's customary victory lap.

He said: "I didn't know what to do because after two more heats I was going to be out again racing.

"The engine was hot and I wanted to prepare my bike for my next race.

"Neil Middleditch stopped me as I was returning to the pits and said 'go out and do a victory lap because that's what the fans want' and I did it.

"When I am racing, I am concentrating solely on that.

"I try to be prepared for every heat that I'm in.

"I don't think about the supporters during meetings. If I do that, it would give me too many problems in my head. I have to think about the racing."

Talking about his win over Crump, Ferjan added: "I just said to myself that if I make a good gate I will try to do my best against him. I'll try to go on the best line and it worked."

I made a good gate in the final heat as well.

"Gate one was a good gate, but the dirt was too far out and I couldn't get into it.

"I had to stay on the inside, Crumpie went wide into the dirt and beat me.

"He is number one in the world and is a great rider. I am just glad to beat him once. It is great for me in my head."
