A NEW marriage venue opened its doors on Saturday for its first clients - the owner's son and his bride.
Birkin House in Stinsford received its licence for civil weddings just two months ago, after it was bought by Gill and Dick John.
Now the happy parents are celebrating after playing host to the ceremony for their son Adam and his new wife Rosie.
Mr and Mrs John, who bought the 12-bedroom house in March this year, say they can't believe how beautiful the place looks with all the decorations.
"It's absolutely fantastic," said Mrs John, 62. "We're quite amazed with what we've achieved. When we retired we decided that this is what we wanted to do. It's a great way to keep up a beautiful old house because the weddings help to pay for it.
"As our first wedding it's a very special occasion but it's even better because it's our son."
Mrs John says when they bought the 1860 house they got a lot more than they bargained for.
She said: "We have inherited all sorts of things, including the cat, some chickens, a couple of pigs and even the gardener.
"The village fete is held here as well, but we don't mind because we love the house so much we're happy to show it off."
The couple are now hoping to take bookings for wedding ceremonies and receptions and can even offer accommodation, including two bridal suites.
Mrs John, from Surrey, said the house's previous owners had done much of the refurbishment but that the last couple of months had been a hectic dash to get everything finished in time for their son's wedding.
"We were a bit worried that we wouldn't get it finished for all the family who are coming, but we have, and it looks wonderful," she said.
