COUNCILLORS have voted to axe two Bournemouth care centres despite objections that this would make life difficult for elderly users.
Bournemouth council accepted a Cabinet recommendation to close Broadwaters day centre in Tuckton and the Seabourne centre in Boscombe at a meeting last night, saving £316,000 a year.
Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Simon Foster, chairman of the Caring for People scrutiny and review panel, said closing the day care facility, which is due to happen in March, would give more room for the continuing respite service and clients will be placed elsewhere as the council seeks to specialise its care facilities.
"One of the remaining day centres will specialise in people with physical disabilities, one in people with moderate dementia and one in people with serious dementia," he said.
Cllr Stephen Clarke, who represents East Southbourne and Tuckton, conceded that investing more in Seabourne would be unwise, but argued passionately against the closure of Broadwaters.
He said East Bournemouth would be left with no day centre cover and the elderly would have to travel across Bournemouth for care.
