SWANAGE and Wareham chalked up their first competitive success of the new season with a convincing 22-0 triumph against Somerset-based Ivel Barbarians in Powergen South West Two East.
From the start, Swans had Ivel on the back foot and a massive drive by the forwards took them to the 22-metre line before Karl Randle opened the scoring and Jason Chadwick added a second.
Phil Graves converted both tries to bring the score to 12-0 with just 10 minutes on the clock.
Ivel then put Swans under some pressure with their pick-up-and-drive moves, but they always seemed to make mistakes inside the 22-metre line.
Towards the end of the half, Swans had a massive drive from their own five-metre line to over the halfway line, but were penalised for not releasing the ball.
The last five minutes of the half were very scrappy, but Swans maintained their composure, ending the half 12-0 up.
Although Swans were playing with the wind in the second half, Ivel had tightened up their defences.
Swans continued to dominate the play, but too many unforced errors prevented them adding to their score.
A couple of Ivel drives had Swans on the retreat and the Ivel pick-up-and-drive moves once again had Swans on the defensive.
However, Swans' defence was up to the task.
On 66 minutes, an interception by Swans centre Simon Robins set him free and good passing between backs and forwards enabled hooker Robert Elford to go in for their third try, taking the score to 17-0.
Swans were not finished yet and, five minutes from time, a driving maul by the Swans pack disrupted the Ivel forwards and Maurice Elford sprinted clear to score Swans fourth try.
Swans: Leak, Gould (Ayres, 75), P Graves, Robins, Chadwick, Harris, G Graves, Randle (Sinclair, 52), R Elford, Williams, Penny, Snowden (Brown, 60), Gregory, M Elford, Warren.
Other result: Ivel Barbarians 2nds 6 Swanage and Wareham 43.
