HUMAN alienation in the Australian desert provides the meat of this acclaimed drama from director Sue Brooks and writer Alison Tilson.
Geologist Sandy (Toni Collette) and businessman Hiromitsu (Gotaro Tsunashima) are stranded in the blistering heat of the desert where they form a previously unlikely friendship. Suddenly, in the face of such an unforgiving and inhospitable environment, human struggles and tussles are dwarfed into insignificance.
Some critics have compared Japanese Story to Lost In Translation, but it starts out a lot lighter in tone and mood, before surrendering to a series of plot reversals that ensure the film's mood has completely changed by the end.
