BASINGSTOKE Town committed 'daylight robbery' to nick a draw at the Wessex Stadium last night, according to Steve Claridge.

Keeper Jason Matthews gifted visiting striker Neville Roach a late equaliser to ensure Weymouth drew their third successive Nationwide South clash.

The shock came after Steve Tully earlier fired the Terras into a deserved second half lead.

But Claridge's side were yet again left rueing missed chances and a defensive error come the final whistle.

The player-boss told Echosport: "I don't really know what to say after that apart from it was a case of daylight robbery.

"I've got absolutely no idea how we haven't won because it was there for the taking like virtually every other match we've played this season.

"But once again a stupid mistake at the back - this time from Jason Matthews - has cost us.

"I feel like I've been mugged - I feel sick not only for myself but for the fans and everyone involved at the club.

"They deserve better than they have been getting and I just hope the players are as upset and devastated about this as I am feeling right now.

"We created stacks of chances which we should have put away. Once Steve Tully put us ahead that should not have mattered because we were in the driving seat.

"Instead one moment of madness has cost us, which is the same old story this season."

For nearly 80 minutes Weymouth looked well in control against second place Basingstoke.

And they were boosted by an excellent performance by defender Jamie Impey making his first start of the season.

"Jamie did well, especially as it was his first start of the season, and individually there were a lot of good performances out there tonight," said Claridge.

"A number of players played well and I thought we were well in control against a Basingstoke side who have been doing really well so far as their position indicates.

"So to suddenly throw it away like that makes it really difficult to take, especially as it keeps happening.

"Whatever I do to try and stop us defending like that does not seem to work. I change the team and system around yet we still make ridiculous mistakes at the back.

"Drawing five games out of 11 is no good to anyone - all I want is for us to win a game of football, it can't be that difficult."

* Lee Charles is set to start for Weymouth tonight when they visit Wimborne Town for their first game in the Sammy McGowan Cup, the competition which was known as the Two Counties Cup last season.

First teamers Nathan Bunce, Simon Browne and Ian Hutchinson are also likely to be involved at the Cuthbury.

The Magpies will be out to repeat their success after securing the inaugural title last term.
