PLANS TO complete a comprehensive network of safe cycling routes spanning across the New Forest have moved into the final stages.

Tourism chiefs have welcomed the plans, which they hope will improve the safety of the district's cycle routes for the growing number of riders cycling in the New Forest.

After extensive consultation between the Forestry Commission, the New Forest Verderers and parish, town, district and county council's the final tweaks to the cycling strategy were agreed last week.

The absence of an approved cycling network in the district was criticised last year by former New Forest Tourism Association chairman Christine Ames, who said the situation was an "accident waiting to happen".

Now the group's marketing representative she said she was delighted with the news that the network of cycling routes has now been approved.

"Safety for the cyclists is always top of the agenda and we welcome the plans, which we hope will enable cyclists using the network to have a safe and enjoyable time in the New Forest," she said.

"Cyclists either bring their own bikes or hire them in the district and to provide them with safe and interesting routes is of paramount importance."

New Forest District Council planner Patrick Hughes said he expected it would take up to 15 years to develop all of the routes, but added that it was vital to have a long-term vision of the district's cycling network for the future.

He added that the district council hopes to include the cycling strategy in Hampshire County Council's new local transport plan, which is now in the planning process.
