POLICE have praised a quick-thinking woman who refused a bogus caller access to her home.
The woman alerted officers after the man claimed to be from energy company Scottish Power and asked to be allowed in to read gas and electricity meters.
The woman, who lives in Bournemouth, became concerned and contacted the company, which told her it had no representatives in the area.
"This lady did exactly the right thing," said DC Gordon Reeves of Bournemouth CID. "She didn't let the man into her home and checked with the company - we're urging others to do as she did."
The man visited the home on Monday, September 13 and is described as in his late 20s with dark, curly hair pulled back from his face, possibly in a pony tail. He is around 5ft 5ins tall, of medium build and was wearing a smart, olive green suit. He had a badge attached to the top of his trousers which read "Scottish Power" in small letters.
Householders have been urged to be vigilant and to ask to see identity cards.
"If you're still unsure that the person is who they say they are, don't let them in and call the company directly to check," said DC Reeves. "A legitimate caller will always be prepared to wait while you check. Most importantly, if you feel unsure or uncomfortable at any time, ask the caller to leave and contact the police immediately."
Dorset Police can be contacted on 01202 552099.
