JASON Harvell made an impressive debut for Bournemouth Poppies.
He produced a man-of-the-match performance in goal as Shaun Brooks' side knocked out local rivals Hamworthy United in the FA Vase at Victoria Park.
Harvell saved a penalty for Poppies and, with Brooks' outfit down to 10 men following the dismissal of Charlie Dibba, the former Cherries midfield play-maker could not praise the 18-year-old keeper enough.
"We worked really hard and we were down to 10 men for the last half hour, so it was a bit like backs to the wall," said Brooks.
"Jason was outstanding, which in a way tells you about the game.
"Obviously, when we went down to 10 men we were under a bit of pressure.
"Jason made a fantastic save from Karim (Bennsaouda) from the penalty spot.
"I think we deserved it though for the work that we put into the game and it's a fantastic result for the club.
"We competed well but if Alex (Pike, Hamworthy United's manager) says that he thinks they should have got something out of the game, I can totally understand that as well."
He added: "I know we haven't got the strongest squad in the league but we've got a really good work ethic and team spirit here.
"Everyone in the club now is pulling in the same direction. We've made a good start this season and now we've got to regroup and see if we can take it up a notch.
"Alex's sides are always competitive, so to actually beat them is fantastic and the lads are all really pleased."
The only goal of the game came after 30 minutes when Charlie Dibba found Dan Banfield inside the penalty area before Banfield finished well beyond Wayne Shaw in the Hammers goal.
Charlie Dibba, who provided the assist, then put his team-mates under immense pressure on the hour when he found himself trudging off to the dressing room after being shown the red card for retaliation on Darren Orchard.
From that moment, Pike's outfit stormed the hosts' goal in search of an equaliser, but Poppies held firm at the back to protect their rookie stopper.
Harry Wilkes then brought Jamie Holland down inside the Poppies penalty box and the referee pointed immediately to the spot.
Bennsaouda stepped up to take it but Harvell made a terrific save to deny the striker and take Poppies into the next round.
On a positive note for Pike, who along with many other managers in the Wessex League have been highly critical of referees at this level of football, he gave glowing praise to the man in charge of the match, Dave Potter, and was keen to make his voice heard.
Pike said: "This referee was top quality and if we had officials like that week in week out I, and I'm sure other people, who have whinged about refs in the press wouldn't whinge if we had referees like him.
"He was sheer quality. He spoke to the players, he spoke to the management, his decisions were clear, he was consistent and everyone knew who the boss was out there.
"Why do we get poor officials and why, when I criticise those poor officials, do I get into trouble? This is the quality official that we're looking for and this is the type of quality official that the Wessex League deserves.
He continued: "I've lost the game 1-0 and, make no bones about it, I'm bitterly disappointed but this official was top class and I want to see officials like him week in week out which would make it a better Wessex League, that's for sure.
"Normally when you;ve lost a game you turn round and say the referee did this and the referee did that, but there is nothing that that official got wrong.
"I'm talking about key decisions at key moments in the game. He got them right and that's all I can ask for from an official."
