THE Pirates took a while to get into their stride against Premier league opponents Isle of Wight but in front of the Islanders' biggest crowd for a number of years the senior club eventually ran out eight point winners.

Bjarne Pedersen and Magnus Zetterstrom dropped just one point each to an opponent, that in the opening heat when Craig Boyce demonstrated that he can still be a force to be reckoned with, whilst Krzysztof Kasprzak was only denied a maximum when Krister Marsh produced a shock win in heat seven.

There was little to split the two sides in the first 10 heats, the Pirates just edging ahead with their third heat advantage courtesy of a Kasprzak/Ferjan 4-2.

Immediately after the break, the visitors showed ther seniority with two 5-1's in the final five heats.

Determined to make a fight of things Jason Bunyan took a golden double tactical substitute ride to cover for Sebastian Tressarieu who was forced to withdraw after just two rides, still suffering ill-effects from the right hand injury that had seen him sidelined for some weeks previously.

Bunyan took a couple of laps to see off Pole Robert Mikolajczak, an Isle of Wight trialist loaned to Poole for the evening, and then saw his team-mate Krister Marsh move aside to allow him in for a four point return and an Islanders 5-3.

Encouraging as it was for Poole's second strings to have such good scores on the night, the Pirates lacked contributions from the reserve berth and also saw the inconsistent current form of Ryan Sullivan continue.
