Never to old to win, Lin

Lyme Regis Golf Club

LIN BAKER is one of the grandees of the Lyme Regis Golf Club.

On Sunday he presented the Shield that bears his name to the club secretary whose team had beaten the captain's 9 to 6, writes William Halden.

He also partnered the secretary Steve Wright to make an individual contribution against the captain Howard Wickes and Cecil Gale. They won on the last green.

Lin, 84 years old, took out an electric buggy on Sunday. "I wanted to makesure I kept up with those youngsters", he said.

He also reminded the competitors at the presentation afterwards that he had presented the shield 44 years ago and it had been competed for every year since then.

On Monday it was a different Lin. Out went the buggy and Lin lined out with 42 competitors for the Briggs Trophy. He took nine shots on his first hole.

"I thought it was the end of my day," said Lin who lives in Yawl. Instead he ploughed on and then at the end of the round he made four pars in a row with single putts on each hole. He ended with a winning plus-four total.

"He's a good old lad", said his playing partner Rick Burgess, 67 years old - the number of years that Lin has been a member of Lyme.

Runner up was Malcolm Hinxman from Bridport, plus three.
