THOSE budding musicians out there who've dreamt of playing Glastonbury will definitely want to read on. Michael Eavis is inviting unsigned bands to battle it out for the opportunity to play at Glastonbury and win the onsite competition in 2005. The lucky winners will play at the festival and get paid £500.

This year was the first time the event took place. It was won by Essex trio The Subways, who went on to secure a record deal and support The Von Bondies, The 5678s and Stellastarr* on tour, as well as earning themselves a slot at the Reading and Leeds festivals. If you're interested you'll need to send in a demo. You can find more information and an online application form by visiting: www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk. All entries must be received no later than January 10, 2005.

SIX-piece rock, pop and electronica crossover The Cinematic Underground will be playing Bartonka this Sunday. The band recently headlined Stage 2 at the Greenbelt music festival in Cheltenham, and blend music, storytelling and a visual stage show. The performance promises to be spectacular as they play tracks from their debut album Annasthesia. To find out more click onto: www.thecinematicunderground.com. Annasthesia is available from Avid Records and Essential Music.

BARTONKA will close its doors for good on October 10, but before the sad farewell all-dayer takes place, it will be holding a punk night. The evening called Sniffin' Skunks (Never Mind The Punks) is on Wednesday, October 6. The Lillettes will be headlining, with The Stand-Ins, Spit Roast, Pause for Thought and Woodslap playing from 8.30pm. Doors are at 8pm.

MISTER Smiths will be holding a fundraiser this Sunday to collect money for a much needed refurbishment. The line-up consists of Condemned, Rather, TBC and Monotype. The evening will be held at Mister Smiths. Doors open 7pm and entry is £4.
