ON-TRIAL striker Charlie Sheringham stepped out of the shadow of his famous dad to become Cherries' penalty hero as the under-18s booked their place in the second round of the Youth Alliance Cup.
Sheringham, the 16-year-old son of former England star Teddy, stepped up to slot home the winning spot-kick after Newport County had held Cherries to a 1-1 draw after extra-time.
After a goalless 90 minutes at Chapel Gate, Cherries fell behind early in extra time and were dealt another blow when Tom Smith was forced off with a hip injury.
Head of Youth Joe Roach had already used his allocated three substitutes meaning Cherries were left to play out the remainder of the game with 10 men.
But prolific striker Brett Pitman, on as a second-half substitute, equalised after good work from Jack Cannon to send the tie into a penalty shoot-out.
All the spot-kicks were converted until Cherries' 16-year-old goalkeeper Lyle Beazley produced a fine save to set up Sheringham to slot home and take the glory.
Roach said: "If our final ball had been better, the game would have been over at half-time.
"But we're delighted to win the game, the players did well to battle back after going a goal down."
Roach also confirmed that young striker Ryan Moss, who made his first-team debut at Luton in August, is set to join Isthmian Premier League side Eastleigh when his minor knee injury clears up.
Roach said: "We think it benefits the young players to give them some competitive football at other clubs. It would only be a short-term loan but it will help his long-term progress."
Cherries under-18s: Beazley, Krauss (Cannon, h-t), Whisken, Cleverley, Hubbard, Geary (Winzer, h-t), Smith, Simpson, Screen (Pitman, 55), Allen, Sheringham.
