SOUTHAMPTON Bishop the Rt Rev Paul Butler took a look at one of the UK's most recently established street markets when he explored parts of the Christchurch Deanery on October 6.

With between 40 and 50 stalls, New Milton's Wednesday market is small fry when compared to Walthamshow Market, which was on the bishop's previous patch.

Founded in 1885 and with 450 stalls open every day of the week, it is classed as Europe's longest street market.

But that did not stop Bishop Paul from enjoying a tour of New Milton market with Mayor Goff Beck, rector the Rev Andrew Bailey, Burley vicar the Rev Diane Webster and town clerk Graham Flexman.

"It's very interesting," said the bishop.

"In an age when markets in lots of places are slimming down, to experiment with introducing one is an interesting way of developing the community."

Before travelling to New Milton, where he visited the new town hall before braving the wind and rain in the market, the bishop enjoyed beef casserole at the monthly church lunch in Burley village hall.

Southern Market Traders' Co-operative Ltd chief executive Paul Lewis chatted to Bishop Paul during his visit.

"I explained to him why I thought New Milton was going to be successful. We have to look after the generation that still likes to come to market."

He wants to expand New Milton market with stalls on both sides of southern Station Road, the town's high street.
