THE LYME Regis town councillor who last Friday resigned as the chairman of the council's policy committee over a row about grant funding, withdrew her resignation on Wednesday. Coun Lorna Jenkin stood down last week after the town council gave an ad hoc grant to the girl guides without going through the correct council procedures. In her resignation letter she told town mayor Barbara Austin, who pushed the irregular grant application through, that she was disillusioned and saddened by the way the council had disregarded its own procedures, "leaving itself open to ridicule by the press, the voters and all other organisations who were denied an equal opportunity to appeal for some available funds." But on Wednesday, she told councillors that she had only resigned after five senior councillors called her at home and told her she should step down. She said that upon reflection she felt sure the council would be able to put right what had happened. Coun Daryl Turner, who also resigned as vice-chairman of the policy committee following the mayor's coup, stuck by his decision even though councillors urged him to reconsider. Coun Ken Meech said this was a relatively minor matter and in all his years as a councillor he had never considered resigning. But Coun Turner said he didn't think it was a minor matter and he was sticking by his decision.
