SINGER-songwriter and music business legend Jackie Leven will be at Mr Kyps in Lower Parkstone tonight (October 14) for his second Dorset gig in the past month.

In September the one-time Doll by Doll founder gave a stirring set at the Royal Oak in Bere Regis and this evening Kyps looks certain get some of the same.

Scots-born Leven of course, has long had connections with this part of the world and says he regards it as his spiritual home.

He first fell in love with Dorset nearly 30 years ago when he rented a farmhouse near Blandford and in the time-honoured tradition of getting it together in the country, set about forming a world conquering new band. What emerged was the late, lamented Doll by Doll - a band that may not have achieved world domination but, even if their critics did call them Dull by Dull, managed to garner an impressive cult following.

When they finally disbanded Leven would go on to develop his talents not only as a singer songwriter but also as a poet and author.

It hasn't been an easy path though. Twenty years ago an unprovoked street attack left him fighting for his life.

The vicious assault temporarily robbed him of his voice and Leven was plunged into depression.

He escaped into a haze of heroin addiction but eventually managed to kick the habit. The experience led him to help found The Core Trust, a body that uses holistic therapies to help recovering addicts.

Leven's set at Kyps tonight is likely to include material covering the entirety of his career including some new songs recently completed in Wales.

Tomorrow Kyps sees a return visit by The Rat Pack with their celebration of Sinatra era swing numbers while Saturday will be marked by the return of heavy rocking tribute favourites Dirty DC.
