YOUNG charity volunteers have brightened up the surroundings of a special needs unit in Weymouth.

Eight members of the Prince's Trust designed and built a miniature garden at The Oaks adult learning centre on Chickerell Road.

The two-week project, which included new paving and wall decorations, came to life after the volunteers raised £270 for the materials needed through a series of sponsored events - including bag-packing at Asda and Safeway.

They also received a boost from building firm Travis Perkins which gave them 50 per cent off.

It was organised as part of the charity's 'Team' inititative, which gets groups of unemployed and young people together to improve their community.

Project foreman Ian Rosewell, 21, from Harbourview on Portland, said it had been great to see the garden completed.

He said: "The residents have told us they are over the moon with it."

Ian added: "Everyone involved has got a huge amount from the project."

Oaks day services officer Sue Hunt said: "The team were lovely and managed to do an awful lot in a short time - it has really transformed the place."
