A scheme to make a council chamber more disabled-friendly will be discussed.

A report will be presented to members of West Dorset District Council's executive committee on Tuesday, outlining details of the plan for the chamber and the Old Crown Court.

Final details of what the revamp will include have yet to be revealed but it is thought the changes will be a scaled-down version of those proposed last year.

West Dorset Council chiefs last year proposed to spend £785,000 to breathe new life into the Old Crown Court and revamp the neighbouring council chamber.

But the project was scaled down after it was decided that money was needed elsewhere and the council was forced to make cuts to its budget to keep council tax bills down. Councillors also suggested the council chamber at nearby County Hall could also be used for meetings.

The work is needed to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act, which came into force this month.

The new scheme for the chamber and court, which forms the Old Shire Hall on High West Street, will cost considerably less than the original scheme - in the region of £200,000.

The district council has already set aside £100,000 for the improvements.
