WHILE single-goal victories are often tight, edgy encounters, Bashley boss Geoff Butler was not concerned as his side sealed the points at Whyteleafe by the slender victory margin.

Richard Gillespie netted his 11th goal of the campaign around the hour mark with a smart turn and shot after good work down the right from Danny Gibbons but Butler insisted it had been a "comfortable" win for his men.

He said: "It was one of the most satisfying team performances we have had for a long time. We defended well all over the pitch and while we could have made things a bit easier for ourselves by taking a couple of the other chances we created, we were worthy winners.

"After the first 15 minutes, we controlled the game and it was a comfortable win in the end."

Butler handed a debut to centre-back Dan Potter but fellow new recruit, Luke Byles - on loan from Havant and Waterlooville - was not registered in time to make his bow.

Bash are now just one point off the promotion places in fourth spot and Butler believes his men are improving all the time.

He said: "I saw some of the sides at the start of the season and wasn't impressed with the standard at all.

"But we have beaten some very good teams in recent weeks. Whyteleafe only lost to AFC Wimbledon 1-0 - so we must be getting better as well."

While the real Dons blaze the trail at the top of the table, Butler also thinks his men are capable of living with the south Londoners.

"Some people think Wimbledon have already won the title and we're only in October. There is a long way to go - nobody is settling for second place, don't worry about that."
