HUNDREDS of runners pounded the streets in the rain for the Weymouth 10 road race.
Organisers cancelled the 2.6-mile youth race for 15 to 17-year-olds because of a lack of entries due to the bad weather conditions.
But the main race went ahead despite the worst wind and rain to hit the event for 21 years.
Organiser Norman White, of Weymouth St Paul's Harriers and Athletics Club, said: "It was an excellent turnout considering the atrocious weather.
"It was the worst conditions for the Weymouth 10-mile race since 1983 but there was a very friendly atmosphere.
"Everyone seemed to enjoy taking part and there were some loyal supporters who came along.
"I would particularly like to thank the race marshals and officials who stood outside in the pouring rain."
Weymouth and Portland Mayor Lynne Herbert put more than 250 athletes under starters' orders on the Esplanade and a crowd of competitors charged along the seafront to Overcombe Corner at Preston. They completed two laps of a circuit around Preston before heading back to the starting point.
Coun Herbert presented the best performing athletes with prizes at an awards ceremony at Weymouth Pavilion after the races finished on Saturday afternoon.
Mr White said the race attracted competitors from across the south of England. Simon King, Weymouth and Portland's tourism and service manager, added: "This is one of Weymouth's most established annual sports events and is a great inspiration for local people of all ages and abilities."
Some of the race proceeds will go towards heart monitors for patients at Weymouth Community Hospital.
