JAMES Hayter became Cherries' 10th all-time record league marksman and then described his Boundary Park match-winner as "the pick" of his 11 goals this season.

Hayter plundered his third double of the campaign as Sean O'Driscoll's in-form side came from behind to chalk up a 2-1 win against League One strugglers Oldham on Saturday.

And the 25-year-old's well-taken decider saw him draw level with 1960s legend Ray Bumstead on 55 league goals and move into 10th spot in the Dean Court hall of fame.

Hayter, who is on target to complete a hat-trick of Cherries golden boots, also tops the League One goalscoring charts alongside Bristol City's Leroy Lita and Pawel Abbott of Huddersfield Town.

Hayter told the Daily Echo: "I would say the second was the pick of my goals this season. They are probably a bit harder when you've got more time to think about them, but it went exactly where I wanted it to.

"I saw their left-sided defender was hobbling and I was in acres of space. I was screaming at Fletch to flick it on and it was a great flick.

"I had a lot of time, but managed to put it in the far corner."

Hayter's early-season exploits have made him the subject of transfer speculation, with Sheffield Wednesday, Reading, Cardiff, West Ham and Portsmouth all linked with the Isle of Wight-born ace.

But the modest marksman has dismissed the rumours as "paper talk" and says he is more concerned with trying to help Cherries sustain their bid for promotion this season.

Hayter added: "It's just a matter of getting on with things. You get it every season and whoever is towards the top of the goalscoring charts will get linked with moves here, there and everywhere but it's all paper talk.

"I'm just looking to keep my head down, keep winning and hopefully keep scoring goals. The way things are going at the moment, I think we've got a great chance of going up.

"The league is quite open this season and everyone is beating everyone else so if we can keep up performances and keep getting results then we stand a great chance of doing something."

Despite going behind to Scott Vernon's disputed second-minute penalty, Cherries rallied after the break and Hayter's double helped them move into fourth spot in League One.

Cherries skipper Karl Broadhurst told the Daily Echo: "James has really come up trumps.

"He thinks he's going to score in every game and that's the sort of confidence that's coursing through the side.

"It's been no secret that in the past couple of seasons people were saying we needed a prolific goalscorer and after Mark Stein left everybody was looking round and wondering who could do it.

"We've got a player in Hayts who we know if he gets a couple of chances, will stick them away.

"He's been magnificent for us and I just hope it continues because he's a good lad and he's getting the credit he deserves."
